There’s no doubt that team building activities and programs are important to create a sense of team cohesion and to provide a commonly shared view of team expectations, performance standards and purpose. Good team building programs leave staff feeling motivated, enthusiastic and supportive of each other . . .the question is, though, how long does it last?

Only you can answer that question based on your own experience but what we’ve found over the years is that the results of team programs are never as lasting or tangible as you’d expect. Why is this so? Well, it’s because most programs only focus on getting conscious-level buy-in to team goals, values and behaviours. Conscious buy-in and articulation of goals and intentions is important, but it’s only going to deliver 5% of the changes you seek because 95% of those changes will be delivered or blocked by habitual ways of operating and interacting that are driven by the powerful subconscious mind.
